a short site about The Divine Comedy

Fin de Siècle

There was raucous laughter in the office when this came on, not because Neil Hannon’s lyrics are clever, insightful of humourous, but because it is awful, arrogant, overblown Gothic clap-trap that scarcely warrants the one star we’re obliged to award it. Each and every track is as horrific as the last: ‘Generation Sex’, ‘Sweden’, ‘Eric Gardener’ – the list goes on and on. Big strings, pompous tunes, putrid vocals… without doubt the most conceited, evil album of the year.
