Casanova - Album of the year
"Funny fellow" giggles a perceptive young woman at the opening of The Divine Comedy's fourth album and, really, she has it just about right. Emerging in the late-'80s as part of a then-middling indie guitar outfit, Neil Hannon has made The Divine Comedy his own, a gorgeous, literate, lush thing now receiving deserved acclaim. (Becoming More Like) Alfie and Something For The Weekend show off Hannon's raffish side and elsewhere Words Of Love, familiar in its instrumental version as the Father Ted theme, is as elegant and touching a pop song as you could ever wish to hear.
