A Short Album About Love

Late last year, The Divine Comedy hired the Shepherd's Bush Empire and a 30-piece orchestra and recorded seven songs which until then had remained impervious to programming on their three albums to date. These seven surging, romantic tours des force now comprise A Short Album About Love, which serves to remind us of Neil Hannon's genius (and that of arranger Joby Talbot) until the next album proper. Talbot deserves special praise since the quality of the arrangements are quite breathtaking. The central section of In Pursuit Of Happiness, horn obbligatos and racing string motifs to the fore, is worth the asking price alone. The tunes are gorgeous and the mood evoked is Julie Christie swinging a handbag as she walks down the Kings Road in 1968. Bliss.
