Liberation
This is some album. Neil Hannon knows where all the fun buttons are, and gets huge pleasure from pushing them all at the same time. ‘Bernice Bobs Her Hair’ thrills with a ‘60s glamour, ‘Lucy’ would break your heart like an egg even if Wordsworth weren’t responsible for the lyrics, ‘Europe By Train’ pushes like a lovesick animal in cage… to be honest, it’s impossible to tell you just what TDC do, because they do it so well that description cheapens them. But I will say this: ‘Tour Daddy’s Car’ is possibly the greatest song ever written. It’s up there with ‘Moon River’, that’s for sure.
