Almost ten years after Father Ted, Neil was asked once again by Graham Linehan to compose the theme music for his series, The I.T. Crowd. It seems likely that Neil’s was the first and only choice of the author since we know how much Father Ted was famous for its music.

So, Neil Hannon came up with some tunes, mainly electronic, but that’d still remind us of some of his Father Ted’s works.

Series 1

It seems actually that Neil Hannon produced original material back in 2005-2006 at the time of the first series. Indeed the first series features also a couple of songs composed and sang by Neil Hannon in addition to theme music. Incidental music previously used on Father Ted can also be heard.
The series finish with a remix of the theme music.

Originally broadcast in early 2006, ‘The I.T. Crowd Version 1.0’ was released from late 2006 in various countries: UK, Australia, Germany and United States. While in the UK the DVD was released with a green/brown artwork, in Australia the DVD was release twice, once with the same colours, and a second time with a blue artwork. The US release of the series came later and features totally different artwork.

The DVD menus are based on classic video-games and features a 8-bit version of the theme music.

Series 2

Òrla’s cameo
appearance
Unlike the first series, Neil Hannon was not commissioned to write original tunes, and so only the theme music is featured on the series. Although, there are two notable points:
  • The episode ‘Moss And The German’ features actor and musician Philip Rham who plays cello. The crew came with the idea to end the episode with him playing the theme music on cello.
  • Neil’s ex-wife, Òrla Little, can be spotted in a minor role in ‘The Dinner Party’ episode.

Series 2 also marks the introduction of Matt Berry as Mister Reynholm.

The series was broadcast in Summer 2007 and released on DVD later in the year, either as a standalone DVD or, in UK, as a boxset with Series 1. The menu featured a new original remix of the theme music.

Series 3

Series 3 was broadcast in late 2008 and released on DVD in 2009. Once again the DVD menu featured a remix of the theme music accompanying a video game animation. The extras also features a documentary ‘Cracking The IT Crowd’ which featured another remix of the theme music; as well as an animatic version of the title sequence featured another new remix of the title music.

In addition of being released on standalone DVD in the UK, US and Australia; the series 3 has been part of a couple of box set in UK. A regular boxset features the series 1 to 3, and a limited ‘Internet in a Box’ edition.
