This song was released on Liberation and later re-recorded to be released as a single and features the best of. Initially, it was supposed to be released as a single in 1993. It was written at the same time as ‘Your Daddy’s Car’, in ’91-92 that is, hence the reference in the second verse.

It’s regularly played live. It seems that after 1999, Neil didn’t particularly stick to the single version. A video was produced by Phil Harrow for the single in 1999, we do not know who directed it.

You’ll see the title written in different ways: ‘The Popsinger’s Fear Of The Pollen Count’, ‘The Popsingers’ Fear Of The Pollen Count’, ‘The Pop Singers’ Fear Of The Pollen Count’ and ‘The Pop Singer’s Fear Of The Pollen Count’. It seems that the latter is the most correct. We’ll stick to this one.

The title is actually based on Peter Handke’s play The Goalkeeper’s Fear of the Penaly Kick. The play’s been adapted for the cinema by Wim Wenders.

Neil wrote this song because he loves the summertime but unfortunately has got hayfever.

It is also said Neil Hannon composed the song with Setanta’s label mate The Frank & Walters’ music in mind, Neil would have joked they should get the royalties for it. [1]
