Three decades and ten albums into a stealth career as one of pop’s greatest unsung tunesmiths, Neil Hannon keeps the in-a-perfect-world hits coming. This time, he fixes his decidedly non-rocking melodic swoon and urbane wit on recessions both financial and romantic, politicians’ sex scandals, as well as the disconnections among commuters wearing earphones.

It’s hard to listen to one of Irish roué Neil Hannon’s lush records without imagining him in an ascot and smoking jacket drinking a brandy. Whether relating to a horny teen’s plea (“To Die a Virgin”) or sneering that a pop diva indeed has “special needs,” Hannon gazes at hypocrisy and other annoyances with a jaundiced, often hilarious eye.

I purchased The Divine Comedy's A Short Album About Love back in August 2013, and from practically my first listen, I suspected that the entire thing was conceived as a love letter to Neil Hannon's favourite horse.

Nacido y criado en el norte de Irlanda, Neil Hannon firmó su primer contrato discográfico con 19 años. Bajo el nombre de The Divine Comedy, sus primeros discos, ‘Liberation’ y ‘Promenade’, recibieron las alabanzas de la crítica, pero fue con su álbum de 1996, ‘Casanova’, y el single “Something for the Weekend”, cuando le llegó la fama mundial. ‘A Short Album about Love’ y ‘Fin de Siecle’ le siguieron, siendo la canción “National Express” de este último el primer ‘hit single’ de la banda.

Todos conocemos algún grupo o cantante que digamos: "no entiendo por qué no lo escucha más gente, si es genial", pues en mi caso uno de ellos es The Divine Comedy.
