In 2010, The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon put together the music for the musical Swallows and Amazons. This endeavor was a long time coming with The Divine Comedy's albums becoming increasingly more theatrical.

Neil Hannon is often referred to as an “unlikely pop star”, and that’s fine by him. At the age of 45 and with an incredible 10 wit-filled albums under his belt as the guiding light of The Divine Comedy, not to mention his notable association with the incomparable Father Ted in the ’90s, the Northern Irish singer/songwriter should be allowed whatever sobriquet he wants.

“Let’s talk of Catherine the Great, let’s talk of love and the power of the state”. OK, yeah, why not? Catherine II of Russia was, after all, the most renowned and longest-reigning female leader in the country’s history (thanks, Wikipedia!) and hers is a story worth exploring.

In the 1990s, The Divine Comedy’s unusual mix of archaic musical styles, hook-laden melodies and audaciously witty lyrics brought a high art swagger to Britpop’s laddishness with songs like Something for the Weekend and their biggest hit, 1998’s National Express.

The Divine Comedy are an indie band, original formed in Northern Ireland in 1989. Fronted by Neil Hannon, (the only consistent member throughout the group’s history), The Divine Comedy are well-known for their whimsical and poetic lyrics and orchestral accompaniments.

De passage en avril dernier à Paris à l’occasion du Arte Concert Festival, The Divine Comedy s’est prêté au jeu du Take Away Show, session live dans un lieu incongru filmée par La Blogothèque. Ici aux Bains Douches, la bande à Neil Hannon ne joue non pas un mais deux morceaux en live : Funny Peculiar, accompagné de l’artiste (et également sa compagne) Cathy Davey, puis Songs of Love. Avec humour et légèreté, Hannon délivre une performance touchante et fait revivre deux titres avec cette classe qui habite le groupe depuis bientôt trente ans.
